We report here on a new arthroscopic direct repair technique for a radial tear of the posterior root of the medial meniscus (PRMM) using a posterior trans-septal portal. Radial tears of the PRMM are commonly observed in the elderly population of Korea and Japan, and the life style of these people requires squatting and kneeling down in daily life. A radial tear of the PRMM results in the loss o...

In this paper, an exact analytical solution for free vibration of rotating bi-layered cylindrical shell composed of two independent functionally graded layers was presented. The thicknesses of the shell layers were assumed to be equal and constant. The material properties of the constituents of bi-layered FGM cylindrical shell were graded in the thickness direction of the layers of the shell ac...

When the characteristic length of an elastic solid is down to the nanometer level, its deformation behavior becomes size dependent. Surface energy /surface stress have recently been applied to explain such dependency. In this paper, the effect of strain-independent surface stress on the deformation of an isotropic elastic solid containing a nanosized elliptical hole is studied by the finite ele...

Lithiation of individual silicon nanoparticles was studied in real time with in situ transmission electron microscopy. A strong size dependence of fracture was discovered; that is, there exists a critical particle diameter of ∼150 nm, below which the particles neither cracked nor fractured upon first lithiation, and above which the particles initially formed surface cracks and then fractured du...

In this research, the effect of rotation on the free vibration is investigated for the size-dependent cylindrical functionally graded (FG) nanoshell by means of the modified couple stress theory (MCST). MCST is applied to make the design and the analysis of nano actuators and nano sensors more reliable. Here the equations of motion and boundary conditions are derived using minimum potential ene...

A distributed Brillouin fiber sensor has been employed to detect localized pipe-wall buckling in an energy pipe by measuring the longitudinal and hoop strain distributions along the outer surface of the pipe for the first time. The locations of the localized pipe-wall buckling are found and distinguished using their corresponding strain-load data. The formation of the buckling process for the c...

In this paper, we investigate some results on hoop algebras and hyper hoop-algebras. We construct a hoop and a hyper hoop on any countable set. Then using the notion of the fundamental relation we define the fundamental hoop and we show that any hoop is a fundamental hoop and then we construct a fundamental hoop on any non-empty countable set.

A model is developed to study the stress generation in a spherical particle subjected to lithium insertion. The model accounts for both the plastic deformation and the coexistence of lithium-poor and lithium-rich phases with a sharp and curved phase boundary. Such twophase and inelastic deformation characteristics often arise during lithiation of crystalline particles with high capacity. A flex...
